About Isaac

User-Centred Design

I approach web design from a philosophy based on modern software engineering approaches based on consistent and well-structured navigation and insight into the real goals and needs of customers.  Understanding how a client’s business works is fundamental to building a site that doesn’t just look pretty, but keeps people coming back again and again because it gives them what they’re looking for.

The Right Tools for the Job

I believe in choosing tools to fit the requirements of a project, whether they be hand-coded HTML and CSS, open-source content management systems such as Drupal, Joomla, WordPress or Movable Type, or completely original code in Ruby, JavaScript, C# or Java.  I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to augment the underlying information architecture with strong visual design.

Academic Grounding

My design expertise is backed by extensive academic research and teaching experience. I hold a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a Graduate Diploma in Computer Science, and have published research in chaos mathematics and dynamical systems, human-computer interaction and computer science education.

I have taught software engineering and human-computer interaction courses at the Universities of Canterbury and Auckland, in addition to six years as a high school teacher of mathematics, statistics, physics and computer studies.

Artistic and Community Involvement

My illustrations and comics have been published throughout the country and exhibited in group shows in Christchurch and Auckland.  I am actively involved in promoting New Zealand talent as editor of the Funtime Comics Anthology and organiser for the New Zealand Comics Creators organisation.  I occasionally tread the boards as an amateur actor and my own play Green Room has been performed at the University of Canterbury.

I am an active member of the Christchurch Interfaith Society.
