Computer Science Unplugged

Computer Science Unplugged is a series of games and learning activities to introduce concepts from computer science to kids. It was originally available in two print editions, but a grant from Google made it feasible to distribute the activities as free PDFs, and to introduce instructional videos, promotional materials, and multiple translations. The Unplugged++ project introduced a new website to accommodate these changes.

The new site is built around the open-source Joomla content management system, customised with plug-ins to provide multiple languages, human-readable URLs and a syndicated news feed. Learning activities remain the core of Unplugged, and I re-organised the site so that each activity has its own page, with the core materials supported by example photographs, videos and links to related material. The design is bright and glossy, and flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of content.

NZCSRSC’08

The New Zealand Computer Science Research Students Conference is typically the first conference attended by local graduate students. The 2008 conference is hosted by the University of Canterbury.

The site follows a structure typical for academic conferences, but emphasises information such as deadlines and price which are crucial for a student audience. The colours are subtly provincial, and the logo is abstracted from the computer science concept of a Turing machine manipulating an infinite tape. The site is built in standards-compliant HTML and CSS, using the Blueprint framework for grid layout and typography, and SMF for the forum.

Funtime Comics

Funtime is a small-press comics publisher based in Christchurch. It runs monthly workshops and prints a diverse range of comics.

The site is plain HTML and CSS, with the current issue presented prominently.

A series of t-shirts I designed for the fine people at androzani.com, a notable Doctor Who website. They have other fine Doctor Who t-shirts for sale, engaging reviews of the episodes, and haiku.

University of Gallifrey t-shirt With this lovely t-shirt you can pretend that you went to the University of Gallifrey. Like Doctor Who. That’s where he went probably*. Doctor Who fans will know what it means and other people won’t. Although to be fair, I know only a little about Doctor Who and I knew what it meant when I was given the brief.

Buy yourself a University of Gallifrey t-shirt.

* I am reliably informed (by someone who claimed to actually be the Doctor, which is as reliable as you get) that Doctor Who actually studied at the Prydonian Academy. But he probably went on to postgraduate studies at the University of Gallifrey. For all I know.

Skaro Institute of Extermination T-Shirt

Over many centuries, the Skaro Insitute of Extermination has developed an unrivalled reputation in the disciplines of plunger-waving, croaky-voiced obedience, emotionless killing, and tricking people into thinking you can’t follow them up the stairs when really it turns out that all along you’ve been able to fly. Now you too can wear the t-shirt that proud Daleks would wear if it were feasible for a Dalek to wear a t-shirt, which it isn’t, and if they wanted to wear a t-shirt in the first place, which frankly is unlikely. But you might. And now you can.

Buy one, should you be so inclined.

Another Bloody Quarry T-Shirt

The Another Bloody Quarry T-Shirt. It also works for fans of Doctor Who, Blake’s Seven, Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Stig of the Dump and every other television programme that follows the fine British tradition of being filmed in a quarry. Also for people who have just generally seen too many quarries, I suppose. Jaded quarry inspectors. People like that. It has a picture of a quarry, so the message really gets across.

You will surely wish to buy one.

Glop Mousepad This Glop Mousepad is a helpful desktop guide to the Manichaean moral metaphilosophy of the Glop universe. Dinosaurs good, spaghetti bad.
