Klio Is No More

If we’re going to breed animals for companionship, keeping them in a semi-juvenile state for greatly extended lifespans, then I guess we have a responsibility to put them to death quietly and gently when their lives start to become too uncomfortable for them.

Klio’s urine test confirmed that she had quite severe diabetes, and although she was only showing a few slight symptoms she would have had about six months of declining health without treatment, or maybe a year of daily insulin injections. So I went to the vet this afternoon to hold Klio while she was put down. If you’ve never seen it done, it’s surprisingly fast but also peaceful.

The worst thing about it was the unfortunate timing. Tomorrow it will be three years since Nicki died, and Klio was Nicki’s cat.
