I have decided to stop doing my PhD. I believe the normal form here is to go part-time, then suspend it “for a year” then to keep meaning to get back to it for the rest of your life. But since I wasn’t getting anywhere very fast, and I couldn’t afford to devote a reasonable amount of time to it while still earning enough to pay my mortgage, and I needed to decide straight away before I had to pay another year’s fees, I’ve decided to just call a halt to the whole thing.
This is not to say that I haven’t learnt a lot of very useful stuff, or enjoyed being a grad student, or anything like that. It’s just not what I want to be doing part-time for an indefinite number of years while worrying about money.
In the short term, I’ll be doing a lot more work on Computer Science Unlugged, and plenty of marking. But I’ll also be looking for full-time work, so do let me know if you know anywhere that needs someone like me.

There are two comics-related events in Auckland over Labour weekend. One will be a genteel event to be held at the Public Library, with local artists talking about their work and no wrestling. The other is Armagedddon.
It turns out I shall be attending both. I will be in Auckland from an unfeasibly early hour on Friday 19 October until about halfway through Wednesday 24 October. You may wish to use this information to adjust your own schedules to be either in or well out of the vicinity, as you see fit.
